Adrian Cooke Statement – Built 2018
On the prairies, what was once austere open space becomes the playing field on which humans interact and respond. Natural/man-made forms derived from, and specific to, this region, are shaped by their purpose and by the diversity of those living here. I draw inspiration from this evidence of human interaction with the environment, and how ingrained patterns of human activity impose and intrude upon our sense of place and alter our relationship with it, evoking a range of sensations from solitude and longing to excitement and wonder. In the sometimes bleak and unforgiving prairie landscape, architectural and natural configurations become visually enticing source material for my work.
